Sign Inventory 1 Week 3

Sign Inventory of Erika Meitner’s “Sex Ed”

-Use of dashes.  Placed where there is an explained silence, “The film bleeps suddenly, freezes / in mid-convince –…” and “…in the silence / of the beep – the longest hanging moment ever –“
-The use of italics as a change in tone “But it feels so good, baby, / how can it be bad?”menstruation or nocturnal emission, / penetration or intercourse.” and “just say no
-The recurrent use of the word “[w]e” in the fourth stanza, lines 1 and 3-6.
-The use of the phrase, “Someone needs to” in lines 66, 69, and 74.
-The intentional uncertainty.  Readers are unsure if the actions are actually taking place or are being commentated from the film, until line 68.
-A baseball theme runs throughout. “varsity jacket” “batting condoms” “third base” “baseball metaphors” and “base desires”
-Attention to sound. “toilets, torque, touch, taste”  “camouflaged carefully” “hickeys quickly” and “exhausts, exalts, raises us up ecstatic”
